Résumé
Paraffin-based microencapsulated phase-change slurries can replace water in conventional low-temperature storage tanks offering several advantages: energy density can be increased by up to 40%, and the temperature around the phase-change region remains more stable, while the slurry retains its fluidity. However, some reduction in heat transfer is expected, mainly due to an increase in viscosity. Despite the potential of slurries, there is limited experimental data available in the literature on conventional storage tank configurations. In this work, an apparatus consisting of a 20-litre cylinder, with an immersed helical coil and an agitator has been realized. The slurry used is MikroCaps “PCM 44 slurry”, with a melting temperature range of 40-44 °C and a particle concentration of 36.7 wt.%. The results show that natural convection is hindered, but the enhanced storage capacity can be achieved with heat transfer rates comparable to those of water simply by stirring the slurry with extremely low mechanical power due to its pseudoplastic behaviour.
