Résumé

In this research, performance characteristics of surface-treated heat exchangers were investigated under frosting conditions. Heat exchangers with four stages and two rows were fabricated, and uncoated, hydrophilic, and hydrophobic units were compared in 90-minute frosting experiments. The air-side pressure drop due to frosting was found to be highest for the uncoated heat exchanger, while the hydrophobic heat exchanger exhibited the lowest pressure drop because of frost retardation. The differences in the sensible heat transfer rates of the heat exchangers were insignificant in the early stages of the experiments. Since the frost layer created thermal resistance, the sensible heat transfer rate decreased as time elapsed. In the early stages of the experiments, the hydrophilic heat exchanger had a slightly higher heat transfer rate than the other heat exchangers.
