Describes how typical inadequate air handling unit and duct system design and installation can lead to excessive contamination and create potentially serious environmental problems when combined with a lack of regular HVAC hygiene maintenance. Describes key considerations when designing an air handling system cleaning project. Notes that simply cleaning is often not sufficient: the source of the indoor air quality problems must be addressed for successful remediation. Discusses in addition the problem of hazardous materials and safety considerations. Gives advice on preparing a hygiene remediation plan.
