The artificial ice-rink in Miercurea Ciuc – Romania was modernised, in order to conform to local and international regulations. Made in 1970, this covered skating rink, with course dimensions of 60x30 meters, was meant to be used for hockey, figure skating and leisure purposes. Its placement in an area of great interest for these sports – Romanian champions in figure skating were trained here, and Miercurea Ciuc hockey team is part of the Romanian hockey elite – determined an extensive use, which led to a constant delay in modernisation operations. A solution involving indirect vapour spreading was chosen, using ammonium as refrigerating agent, due to its favourable thermo-dynamic and environment friendly properties. Since a small quantity is used (maximum 50 kg, in the refrigerating unit exclusively), it does not involve any risk for athletes or the audience. The chiller is a compact equipment of high efficiency and it is provided with a capacity setting device as a function of the cooling capacity demand. In winter, when the outside temperature falls below –15°C, the system operates in free cooling mode (the brine solution is chilled by Drycooler and the chiller does not work). Under these operating conditions power consumptions saving are reported. The present paper presents technical data about the refrigeration system, as well as a TEWI coefficient analysis over five consecutive years on the environment.
