Résumé
Intensifying the heat integration between the distillation columns of a cryogenic air separation unit can yield a considerable reduction in its inefficiencies. Accurate predictions of the achievable reduction require more detailed experimental input on the thermal energy transfer and the separation efficiency of heat integrated distillation columns. The design of an experimental set-up is presented that allows for this performance assessment. The set-up consists of two concentrically integrated distillation columns that are equipped with 6 theoretical stages of structured packing and that operate at total reflux. Evaporating liquid nitrogen is used in the condensers and electrical heaters are used as reboilers. The inner cylindrical column has a diameter of 14 [cm] and operates at pressures in between 1.5 and 20 [bar]. The outer ring-shaped column has a diameter of 22 [cm] and operates at pressures in between 1.5 and 5.0 [bar]. The maximum total heat duty amounts to about 25 [kW].
