Résumé
Heat pump based humidification-dehumidification (HDHHP) is an innovative method of desalination which acts like a water cycle, offering a sustainable process for producing fresh water. The system is enough flexible to work at a wide range of feed salinity to avoid the excess discharging the brine to the environment. In this research, a novel heat pump based humidification-dehumidification (HDHHP) desalination system has been investigated and optimized for a wide range of salinities with a near-zero liquid discharge (NZLD) approach. Both design and off-design steps have been considered in this study. At the design step, for constant operating conditions, i.e. specified inlet air and inlet saline water properties, the dimensions of the system are estimated as a function of saline water salinity. Then, the salinity that has the highest Gained Output Ratio (GOR) is calculated, and the final dimensions of the system are estimated. Finally, by applying the method of characteristics, the off-design performance of the system is extracted at the second step. It is observed that although increasing the salinity reduces GOR, however designing components at a higher salinity results in a higher off-design GOR. The results show the hourly Yield and GOR of the system are 0.93 kg h−1 and 2.37, respectively. The economic analysis of the designed system shows 7 % increase (0.0143 to 0.0152 $ L−1) in cost per liter by using saline water in a wide range of salinity.
