Résumé
This research focuses on optimizing the Chromium Potassium Alum (CPA) based salt pill for Adiabatic Demagnetization Refrigerator (ADR) to minimize the volume of the salt pill. A computational model employing an iterative algorithm predicted an optimized salt pill volume of 65 cm³ and a mass of 90 g, aligning well with existing literature. Based on this model, the calculated volume of the salt pill used in this study is 30 cm³. For this optimized volume, two salt pill designs are proposed: one featuring a copper foam thermal bus and the other utilizing copper wire-based thermal buses. Both designs were investigated with identical dimensions and tested under the same operating conditions. Eddy current losses were calculated using COMSOL Multiphysics 6.0, with the copper wire design showing lower losses and better performance. The demagnetization processes were also simulated, and temperature vs. time plots for isothermal demagnetization are provided for both designs. The copper wire-based design demonstrated more stable and efficient thermal behaviour despite the copper foam achieving a lower temperature.
