Heat pumps are a valued technology for residential heating as they are able to reduce the overall carbon emission of the building’s heating system. However, heat pumps use working fluids, which also have an environmental impact. Therefore, state-of-the-art heat pumps employ working fluids with low environmental impact. Yet, some disadvantages of this substitution can be the flammability and the high compressor discharge temperatures which leads to a reduced lifetime. Compressor injection can be used to reduce the compressor discharge temperature. Vapour, liquid, and two-phase injection are all possibilities to accomplish this. In this work, a setup is designed and validated to test gas and two-phase injection compressors. To experiment on a wide variety of operating conditions, the injection pressure and injection vapour quality are controlled independently of each other. The test bench is first validated based on the energy balance over the cycle and each component. The data of the experiments showed that the energy balance over the entire setup can be closed within 5%. These are promising results and show that the setup is ready for an extensive experimental campaign.
