Integrated design of high indoor air quality to promote human health, comfort and productivity.

Résumé

Numerous comprehensive field studies in different parts of the world have documented that high percentages of occupants in many offices and similar buildings find the indoor air quality unacceptable and suffer from SBS symptoms even though existing ventilation standards and guidelines are met. A series of recent independent studies have documented that mediocre indoor air quality also has a negative impact on the productivity of office workers. This will provide a strong incentive to design for high indoor air quality. A paradigm change is needed where we try to satisfy even the most sensitive persons in a space. Compared to today's practice, this may require that we improve IAQ by several orders of magnitude. This paper discusses how such a dramatic improvement can be realized without increasing ventilation. Five methods are suggested as means to reach this ambitious goal of satisfying all people. Applying these simultaneously by integrated design of the building may even allow for reduced ventilation and energy consumption.
