Optimal thermoelectric heat pump design to efficiently perform the power-to-heat process of a thermal energy storage system.

Résumé

The increase of Renewable Energy penetration into the energy mix as a response to decarbonizing energy production has led to an energy management problem due to their inherent intermittency. Energy storage appears to be the solution to this issue, where thermal energy storage plays a significant role in providing not only electrical but also thermal energy when needed. The power-to-heat process would use excess energy production by green means and convert it into heat to be subsequently stored. Heat pumps are very promising to pursue the power-to-heat process taking advantage of their possibility to present COP values bigger than one. Consequently, in this work, a single and double-stage thermoelectric heat pump is proposed to increase the temperature of an airflow so the thermal energy is stored at a sensible heat storage. The proposed experimental system increases the power-to-heat COP process by 16.53 % with respect to conventional electrical resistors.
