Résumé

The energy efficiency of air-conditioning equipment is becoming an important factor for manufacturers who are confronted throughout the world to demands stemming from increased consumer awareness, increased energy prices and more stringent standards. In an increasing number of countries, minimum energy performance standards are being enforced as an incentive to the dissemination of high efficiency equipment and the reduction of greenhouse gases emissions. The objective of this paper is to explain the basics of energy efficiency increase in unitary air conditioners and heat pumps and what are some of the technical solutions put into use. In a first part, the fundamental thermodynamic principles are examined to explain briefly what design factors affect the energy efficiency of air conditioning equipment based on the vapour compression cycle. Some rules of thumb will be given to predict potential efficiency gains. In the second part, the paper examines how leading manufacturers have implemented some designs to increase the efficiency of their products. This review points out that the main efficiency improvements are generated from the use of advanced electric motors in fans and compressors, enhanced heat transfer equipment, efficient fan design and advanced control schemes. Extra costs induced by increased equipment efficiency will be shortly examined.
