Résumé

Reports the results of asking a number of engineers what they feel are the trends and developments affecting building air conditioning in the USA. Notes: heavier emphasis on indoor air quality, leading to a desire to eliminate fibreglass; higher levels of air filtration within air handlers; fear of litigation over sick building syndrome leading to more monitoring and measurement and more attention being paid to complaints; the use of chemical-free steam for humidification; the use of floor-air systems, CO2 sensors, specifying less complicated systems for ease of maintenance; with direct digital controls replacing pneumatic actuators; a comeback of heat pumps and enthalpy wheels; ground-coupled heat pumps for schools with the use of thermal grout; the increased use of commissioning; and separate air conditioning equipment acquisition.
