High-temperature heat pump two-stage configurations using low global warming potential refrigerants.

Résumé

High-temperature heat pumps (HTHPs) can cover temperature lifts of about 100 K in some applications. Single-stage configurations result in a lower coefficient of performance (COP) in this scenario. This paper analyses two advanced HTHP configurations for industrial applications with specific thermal requirements. Booster cycle is considered as a potential architecture when different waste heat sources are available, whereas the extraction cycle is conceived for industrial processes of higher temperature glide. Both configurations are compared with a two-stage cycle with economizer, which is set as the reference. Moreover, several alternative low GWP refrigerants have been comprehensively analyzed to identify promising candidates to replace HFC- 245fa, the reference working fluid in HTHPs. HCFO-1233zd(E), HCFO-1224yd(Z), HFO-1336mzz(Z) and its mixture R-514A present potential as alternative refrigerants in HTHPs. According to the results, booster configuration improves COP and VHC around 95% and 320%, respectively, whereas the extraction cycle increase COP and VHC increase by 150% and 100%, respectively.
