Résumé

A new low capacity single-effect ammonia/lithium nitrate absorption chiller has been designed and tested in CREVER’s laboratory at the Rovira i Virgili University. The authors have applied for a patent on the unit configuration that uses BPHEs in all its components, including the generator and absorber, and some other novelties such as a special refrigerant distribution and mixing device. For more than three years a first test campaign was conducted on a laboratory prototype. The results proved that at driving heat, cooling-water, and chilled water temperatures of 90, 35, and 15ºC, respectively, the COP was 0.68 and the cooling capacity 11.3 kW.On the basis of this previous experience, a new compact air-cooled prototype has been manufactured. A finned tube coil integrated in the unit frame cools the water that passes through the condenser and absorber BPHEs. A variable speed fan is used. The first test campaign was conducted at 600 rpm. At nominal thermal conditions of 90, 35 and 15ºC for the driving heat, ambient air and chilled water, respectively, the cooling capacity was 9.2 kW and the COP about 0.60. At an ambient air temperature of 40ºC the absorption chiller could still produce 64% of its nominal cooling capacity.
