Développement de caloducs à boucle pour des applications cryogéniques.

Development of loop heat pipes for cryogenic applications.

Résumé

Some efforts have been made to extend the use of loop heat pipes in cryogenics, because of their simple construction. In 1991, a loop heat pipe was demonstrated to work at the liquid nitrogen temperature level. The present work extended these efforts, by showing that loop heat pipes can function at any cryogenic temperature level right down to 4 K. This extension was made possible by selecting pipe diameters based on the Laplace constant for the working fluid. Because of the low volumetric expansion of low boiling-point fluids, selection of a proper diameter is not a sufficient condition for ensuring the functioning of a loop heat pipe; gravity plays an important rôle in this case.
