Résumé
Metrological relevant flow measurement under cryogenic conditions is one of the most challenging tasks in process measurement. While the metrological requirements are defined in standards like OIML-R117-1/2, the realization of a cryogenic flow test bench for metrological control of the flow meter is far from standard work. Ultrasonic flow measurement offers the possibility to separate the influencing factors and to estimate the contribution of the different factors in dedicated experiments. One of these factors is the so called zero point error, which gives the deviation of the measurement with flow at rest. SICK as a manufacturer of ultrasonic flow meters aims to extend the use of its product portfolio to the cryogenic range. The ILK Dresden is accompanying the development phase with a test setup for the characterization of the ultrasonic transducer in Liquid Nitrogen (LN2). The final objective is to demonstrate the suitability of the transducer and the uncertainty contribution of the time measurement under cryogenic conditions.
Therefore, a laboratory-scale test setup was realized which provides both a stationary fluid without any disturbance and precise pressure and temperature conditions. The suitability of the transducers under cryogenic conditions was proved successfully showing a reasonable signal response. The system time delays were determined for both fluids. Hence, the comparability of the results for LN2 and water was shown which furthermore allows a transfer of measurement results under ambient conditions to an application under cryogenic conditions. Thus, the measurement with water is sufficient for the verification of the transducers, so that effort and costs can be saved without loss in accuracy.
