Résumé

The influence of socio-demographic factors upon human thermal comfort is discussed and tested using an assessment carried out from field surveys in the summers of 1997 and 1998. The surveys were based on 60 buildings in Ghadames (30 old traditional buildings, naturally ventilated, and 30 new contemporary air-conditioned buildings). 270 participants from both types of buildings responded to questionnaires. The results indicate that the construction of residential dwellings using traditional methods is more conductive to the climatic conditions of hot-dry climate, while suiting the cultural requirements and life style of the occupants.
