Résumé

The condenser that consists of several heat exchangers is often configured to minimize the size of an air-cooled water chiller. This study has found that different configurations of the heat exchangers will affect the flow distribution across the heat exchangers significantly. The pressure loss thus affected will also cause the change in the total airflow through the heat exchangers. These effects on the heat transfer performance of the condenser have been analyzed. This study used a typical air-cooled chiller for comparison when the configuration of the heat exchangers is varied. There are three cases studied. The actual typical design and two variations for improvement are presented. Measurements for the actual typical design were conducted for comparison with that of computer simulation. The computer simulation was then used for the analysis of the airflow distribution various configuration of the condenser but using the same fan characteristic curves. The important factors to the chiller performance are discussed. It was found that the condenser configuration can be changed to increase 9.5% for airflow and 6.2% for heat transfer.
