Résumé

With around 30% of the global LNG market now based on spot volumes, versus only 10% in the early 2000s, it has been tempting for buyers in emerging LNG markets to rely on spot purchases rather than long term contracts, particularly during periods of low prices.
The paper analyses the LNG procurement experiences of Bangladesh and Pakistan during the spot price spikes from late 2021 to early 2023. It examines their responses to high prices, subsequent rebalancing of LNG procurement strategies and makes high-level recommendations for future sourcing approaches.
