Étude d’un refroidisseur à diffusion-absorption utilisant un échangeur de chaleur à plaques comme générateur.

Thermodynamic performance evaluation of a magnetocaloric air conditioner prototype.

Résumé

The phase-out and phase-down of refrigerants incentivize the search for novel cooling solutions. Among them, magnetocaloric refrigeration stands out as one of the most promising emerging technologies. However, the prototypes developed so far did not achieved the expected performance. Moreover, many irreversibilities, such as heat exchangers losses, are commonly disregarded in magnetic refrigerators. Therefore, this work presents an experimental evaluation of a large-scale magnetic air conditioner, where the performance is assessed with and without considering irreversibilities external to the active magnetic regenerators. Experimental tests are carried out in a calorimeter and the performance of the system is evaluated with respect to the cooling capacity, COP and second law efficiency. The maximum cooling capacity achieved by the system is 680 W and the maximum temperature span is of 8.7 K. An increase of one order of magnitude in the COP and second law efficiency was encountered when external irreversibilities external were considered. Hence, it is considered of the utmost importance to take these losses into account when comparing magnetocaloric prototypes with conventional vapor compression systems.
