Résumé

A simulation model was developed to analyze the steady-state operation of a cascade vapor compression refrigeration system. The three heat exchangers, namely, condenser, intermediate heat exchanger (or cascade condenser) and evaporator are of the brazed plate type. Given the dependence of the heat transfer coefficient on the local governing conditions on each side of the heat exchangers, a multi-zone approach was adopted for this model. Accordingly, each heat exchanger was divided into a number of control volumes for which fundamental mass and energy conservation equations, as well as the effectiveness and heat transfer rate equations, were applied. Appropriate correlations for the zone averaged heat transfer coefficients, for either single phase, condensing or evaporating flows, were chosen. In order to predict the thermal performance of the cascade cycle, the resulting system of non-linear algebraic equations was solved numerically. Finally, the model was employed to simulate refrigerants that can be used in cascade cycles.
