Résumé

Adsorption desalination cum cooling is an innovative and promising technological advancement that captures water vapour from the evaporator by adsorption, offering a sustainable solution for freshwater production and cooling. This work explores an unconventional cycle incorporating mass and heat recovery using pressure equalization between the adsorption beds of a two-bed silica gel-water adsorption desalination cum cooling system (ADCS). Our investigation focuses on two cases: When the evaporator temperature is lower than the cooling water temperature (desalination cum cooling) and when these temperatures are equal (desalination) of the system under various operating conditions, accounting for the effects on evaporator vapour generation and water vapour adsorption and desorption in the adsorption beds. The results show that the small-scale system can attain a Specific cooling power (SCP) of 105.66 W kg-1 with a Specific daily water production (SDWP) of 4.46 kgw kg-1(sg)-d-1 and performance ratio (PR) of 0.28 when operated for desalination cum cooling purposes. There is an increment in water production of 102.69 % when the system is operated for desalination application as it yields water with SDWP of 9.04 kgw kg-1(sg)-d-1 and PR 0.44 at the inlet temperature of 90 °C hot water, 28 °C cooling water along the optimal mass and heat recovery time of the 30 s.
