The objective of the present study was to investigate a suitable PCM and its characteristics in spherical containers. The thermal properties of technical grade paraffin(n-tetradecane) were studied. Firstly, DSC tests were conducted to evaluate the cold storage capacity and phase change temperature range in order to predict whether the material is suitable or not. Secondly, another method called temperature-time-curve was used to analyze thermal characteristics of materials inside three spherical containers with diameters of 65, 83 and 100 mm during freezing and melting processes. It was observed that a lower constant water-bath temperature results in a faster freezing rate and a larger solidified mass fraction. The experimental results indicated that the biggest diameter was not good for solidification process because of low thermal conductivity. And the discharging time for the 83 mm ball was just one hour more than the 65 mm ball, so from practical perspective the diameter was more recommendable no matter for the charging and discharging process. Those conclusions are of great directive function for expanding applications of the cool thermal energy storage technology in the centrifugal water chillers.
