Résumé

Passive solar is the most promising area for renewable energy in the City of Newcastle. If new domestic and non-domestic buildings in Newcastle can be constructed with passive solar features, then there could be considerable energy savings for minimal extra construction costs. Passive solar also has considerable potential for existing buildings and should be considered carefully when buildings are due for refurbishment. Active solar has the greatest potential for use with domestic hot water when fitted to a system with an existing electric hot water heater. Unfortunately, active solar is relatively expensive, and does not appear to offer any significant advantages to the City of Newcastle at present.
