Etudes expérimentales sur un tube vortex simple Ranque-Hilsch.

Experimental study on a simple Ranque-Hilsch vortex tube.

Résumé

The Ranque-Hilsch vortex tube is a device by which cold gas can be generated using compressed gas. To understand the cooling mechanism of this device, it is necessary to know the pressure, temperature and velocity distribution inside the tube. In order to investigate this, a simple vortex tube has been built and nitrogen is used as its working fluid. For the measurement of the pressure and velocity, the authors have made a special Pitot tube. This Pitot tube consists of a capillary which has only one hole in the cylinder wall. It can be rotated around its axis and translated along its axis. Furthermore, they have inserted a thermocouple. In this way, pressure and temperature can be measured. The measurements can also be done at various positions along the vortex tube. Using this set-up, mappings of the pressure and temperature fields inside the tube are made. From these measurements, also the velocity fields inside can be determined using the Bernoulli equation. Analysis of these fields gives insight in the energy transport mechanism in the vortex tube and the associated cooling. Due to the presence of the measurement probes the temperature, velocity and pressure fields change.
