Résumé
The air-conditioning system is often the most energy consuming system in tropical buildings. The radiant floor cooling system is a comparatively newer technology than the conventional convective cooling technology and have since proven to be more energy efficient than the latter. A field survey was conducted at a green office building in Malaysia that was installed with a multi-floor radiant cooling system with the intention to evaluate the performance and energy conservation potential of this system. The indoor environmental parameters were measured by using an electronic data logger and the building energy management system (BEMS) was used to record the energy consumption data. The collected energy consumption data was compared with the estimated energy consumption of an all-air VAV system that was designed by using a cooling load estimating software. The results showed that the radiant cooling system only used up about half of the energy required by the allair system by providing the same level of air conditioning in a tropical building, which translates to a cost savings of about RM 165,000.00 (USD 54,000) annually under the current electricity tariff rate. The outcomes of this study showed that the radiant floor cooling system is not only a more energy efficient system for application in large commercial buildings in the tropics, but it is also able to provide the same level of thermal comfort by using less electricity.
