Résumé

Due to electricity and natural gas consumptions, final energy use in households in Portugal has a significant impact. It has been increasing for the last two decades, against the tendency in most EU countries, representing nowadays 17% of the total final energy use in the country (Eurostat, 2010; 2011). The current Portuguese regulation about thermal performance of buildings, issued in 2006 to put into force the measures established in the European Directive 2002/91 for the Energy Performance of Buildings (EPBD), considers also Indoor Air Quality aspects. In the design phase of residential buildings a minimum infiltration rate of 0,6 air exchanges per hour is considered, but some uncertainty persists about the trueness of this figure in the existing and newly built houses. Due to the efforts carried out to better insulate the envelopes of buildings, the role of air infiltration rates became more important, which justifies the need of a better characterization of the building stock in order to design the strategies to improve energy performance and promote energy savings. Several series of trials were performed using the decay concentration technique in 20 residencies in the Oporto District under regular occupation, using the metabolic CO2 released by the occupants as tracer gas. The results obtained are compared and discussed with those estimated by the methodology of the current national thermal code for residential buildings.
