Résumé

One of the most interesting applications for latent thermal energy storages is in the air conditioning (AC) field, in which the possibility of a direct integration of the storage with an AC unit powered by photovoltaic panels can lead to huge energy savings by matching the energy source availability with the cooling demand, which are commonly mismatched. This is particularly true especially in hot and humid climates. This work experimentally investigates a novel 18 kWh latent thermal energy storage which uses the roll-bond technology to efficiently store and release cold energy exploiting the solid/liquid phase change process of 300 kg of a bio-based PCM having a melting temperature of 9 °C. Several thermocouples were inserted in the tank to locally monitor the PCM temperature. The results analysed the cold energy stored and the temperature field at different working conditions. Furthermore, continue and batch cold energy charging and discharging phases were studied and compared.
