Résumé

Chlorine-free HFC refrigerants are replacing the CFC/HCFC refrigerants in automotive air-conditioning, domestic refrigerators, commercial refrigeration, and residential air-conditioning. More polar lubricants such as PAGs (polyalkalene glycols) and POEs (polyolesters) are used with the more polar HFC refrigerants. Automotive air-conditioning uses PAGs with HFC-134a; domestic refrigerators, commercial refrigeration and air-conditioning industry uses POEs with HFC-134a, R404A, R507, R407C and R410A. Control of contaminants such as moisture, air, solid particles and other active chemicals, a prerequisite for the hermetic system integrity, is essential for long term performance and reliability of refrigeration and air conditioning systems. The paper discusses industry's experiences to date with HFC refrigerants and the need for contaminant control to insure proper system performance and avoid malfunctioning of expansion devices.
