Experimental investigation of high-glide refrigerant mixture R1233zd(E)/R1234yf in a high-temperature heat pump.

Experimental investigation of high-glide refrigerant mixture R1233zd(E)/R1234yf in a high-temperature heat pump.

Résumé

Temperature glide matching using zeotropic mixtures is hypothesized to yield performance improvements in refrigeration and heat pumping if the heat source and sink undergo large temperature changes, such as in many industrial applications. Still, experiments using high-glide zeotropic mixtures in high-temperature heat pumps proving the predicted COP improvements are very scarce. This paper experimentally investigates COP changes using a refrigerant mixture of R1233zd(E) and R1234yf at three compositions in a comparison with pure R1233zd(E). The test matrix maintained the heat sink outlet temperature at 100 °C and the heat source inlet temperature at 60 °C. The temperature differences on the heat source and sink were varied from 5 to 35 K. The COP improved by 30%, and the volumetric heat capacity increased by almost 100%, comparing the best mixture composition against pure R1233zd(E) for a temperature difference of 35 K. An increase of the approach temperature in the evaporator diminished the improvement compared to the theoretically possible improvement given constant pinch points. A comparison to the best-performing HFO/HCFO in a simple model predicts a COP improvement of 14% for the same operating conditions.
