Résumé

This study presents an experimental comparison of the drainage and frosting performance between a horizontal- finned microchannel heat exchanger (HMHX) and a vertical-finned microchannel heat exchanger (VMHX) with extended leading edges. Dynamic dip tests and wind-tunnel experiments under wet and frosting conditions are carried out to systematically evaluate their performance. Results from dynamic dip testing show the VMHX has a superior drainage capability, with a drainage rate of 84.6 g min 1 compared to 3.4 g min 1 for the HMHX. Under wet conditions, the VMHX exhibits continuous drainage and a consistently lower airside-pressure-drop increase. In contrast, the HMHX displays periodic drainage at air velocities ≤ 2.38 m s 1 , causing cyclical fluctuations in pressure drop, airflow rate, and heat transfer rate. During periodic frosting-defrosting tests, the VMHX effectively delays windward frost blockage. Consequently, the VMHX achieves significantly higher heat transfer rates across multiple periods for both hot-coolant and natural defrosting strategies. For example, with hot-coolant defrosting, the mean heat transfer rate of the VMHX is 51.07%–57.87% higher than that of the HMHX in periods 2–5. These findings demonstrate that the vertical fin configuration of the VMHX offers distinct advantages in water drainage and frost retardation, highlighting its strong potential for use as an evaporator in air-source heat pump systems.
