Transition to lower GWP refrigerants in the US is expected to accelerate, driven by the largest CO2 allowance reduction of 30% in 2024 and the finalized technology transition rule. This trend is also true for heat pump water heaters and with their expected growth in adoption due to decarbonization efforts as well as DOE’s proposed minimum efficiency regulation for water heaters. To that end, three low GWP alternatives, R-456A, R-444A, and R-485A, are discussed in this work. Refrigerant properties, cycle performance, and system test results are assessed and compared against incumbent HFCs. Both R-456A and R-444A had slightly improved capacity and COP compared to R-134a. Additional evaluation showed COP can be improved by more than 10% with a larger condenser by utilizing refrigerant glide of these zeotropic blends. R-485A also showed 10% COP increase over R-744 at 20% lower gas cooler pressure. The results highlight that there are promising solutions with GWP values less than 150 while maintaining similar properties to incumbent refrigerants.
