Duct-system leakage: how much is too much?

Résumé

Without duct-leak testing, the unknowns in fan power contingency planning are amplified greatly. By specifying testing to a maximum duct-system leakage and requiring taping or sealing of terminal connections, it is reasonable to estimate a total system leakage well under 5 percent, knowing it will be somewhat less under actual operating pressures. The calculations for the simple, low pressure system in this article indicate that such a specification, including testing, is justifiable economically, based on operating-energy savings.
