Implementation and validation of an active electrocaloric regenerator component in TCC Builder.

Résumé

A fast and reliable approach that evaluates the thermal and power performance of a system where multiple thermal devices (refrigerators, heat pumps and generators), based on different thermal principles (thermoelectric, thermoacoustic and electrocaloric) are connected to work in unison is needed. This will enable optimization to be carried out for all the possible combinations of coupled devices for a desired combined output. Here we present a part of such framework, the electrocaloric refrigerator implemented as a component into an open-source code TCCbuilder. As input the code uses preprepared functions taken either from experimental measurements or numerical simulations, which characterize the behaviour of the device and calculates an output. Taking an example of an active electrocaloric regenerator prototype and its behaviour describing functions from the literature, we verify the implementation of the component. Furthermore, we present a case study with two electrocaloric refrigerators linked in cascade and asses their feasibility and performance.
