Résumé

Cryotreatment forcibly transforms retained austenite in any conventionally heat treated tool, leading to induced residual stresses and microstructural improvement. Experiments carried out yielded the following. The conversion of retained austenite into martensite is an isothermal process. The maximum hardness was attained by quenching at -70 deg C. Isothermal holding beyond three hours did not result in further transformation. As the quenching temperature was lowered below -60 deg C, induced residual stress became more and more tensile. Quenching in -80 deg C lead to high HRC value but induced tensile stresses that were detrimental to tool life. Microstructural analysis shows that the larger alloy carbides are broken into finely dispersed carbides in 2 hours and more soaking time.
