Influence of loading and unloading profiles on an active elastocaloric regenerator: a numerical study.

A transient numerical analysis was carried out to investigate the influence of different loading and unloading profiles (instantaneous, linear, and semi-parabolic) on the thermal performance of a spiral shaped elastocaloric device. The model focuses solely on heat transfer within a 100 mm-long spiral section composed of alternating layers of elastocaloric material (0.30 mm) and water channels (0.30 mm). Each loading profile was applied and released for a fixed time tloading and tunloading, corresponding to a rotation frequency of 1 Hz (Tušek et al., 2016; Cirillo et al., 2026). Results, expressed in terms of cold-end temperature variation, cooling power and Coefficient Of Performance (COP), show that the ideal instantaneous loading case provides the highest thermal performance, while smoother profiles lead to slightly reduced effectiveness. These findings offer insights into the role of load temporal profiles in optimizing elastocaloric regenerators.
