Résumé

The LNG industry sees increasing interest in developing LNG offshore projects to unlock new gas fields without necessity of land permitting or to provide gas to consuming countries with fast track solutions. In addition, the congestion of newbuilding yards and the large numbers of LNG carriers to become available in the near future make it very attractive for innovative solutions to convert membrane LNG carriers into FLNG or FSRU. The conversion of existing LNG carriers offers various advantages including affordability, increased competition compared to newbuild yards, shorter project timeline mainly driven by the long lead items and upcycling available LNG vessels for reduced emissions. Conversion of membrane LNGCs has already been successfully performed for FSRU/FSU but not on floating liquefaction assets so far.
The purpose of this paper is to focus on the feasibility studies done to confirm the concept of converting membrane LNGC into FLNG including the stability aspects, the sloshing assessment of a single-row FLNG design for offshore sites and the flexibility of the membrane tanks and the ability of the hull to sustain the heavy liquefaction topside modules. In addition, the following engineering conversion work required for FLNG service will be addressed:
- Upgrading the cargo tank design pressure and MARVS to 700 mbarg
- Confirming the pump tower strength without filling level restriction on site
- Integrating the LNG rundown line to the cargo handling system
- Ensuring positive isolation between all cargo tanks to increase the uptime in case one-tank-entryis needed
- Applying the ASP notation for avoiding in-tank entry with RBI approach and enhanced monitoringincluding the sloshing virtual sensor.
