Résumé

In terms of the National Environmental Management Act, all South Africans have a fundamental right to an environment which is not harmful to health or well-being. However, despite the promulgation of this legislation and related legislation with respect to ambient air quality standards, the enforcement and the concomitant prosecution of offenders appear problematic at present. Whilst health, comfort and economic implications of sick building syndrome amongst office employees are priorities in most developed countries, there is a relative dearth of South African research into this problem compared with industrialized countries.
