Résumé

This paper describes the full potential of natural refrigerants for complying with the Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol and for avoiding near-term climate tipping points. It begins with sobering scientific findings of catastrophic impacts on human and natural ecosystems unless hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) and other greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions are rapidly eliminated. It presents a road map for engineers to proactively engage policymakers to achieve the full potential of natural refrigerants rapidly, contingent on refrigerant choice based on local service capability, emergency response, and recognizing which natural or synthetic refrigerants safely provide the lowest life cycle carbon footprint in specified applications, with emphasis on Enhanced and Localized Life Cycle Climate Performance (EL-LCCP). The Montreal Protocol must be strengthened and accelerated to avoid climate tipping points, even if it is necessary to tolerate some trifluoroacetic acid (TFA), polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), and VOC atmospheric impacts during the rapid transition to sustainable cooling.
