Effect of suction-line heat exchangers on the performance of direct expansion evaporators.

Résumé

Performance of air cooling evaporators controlled by thermostatic expansion valves is often poor when they operate with low refrigerant-to-air temperature difference because of the difficulty in achieving sufficient refrigerant superheat. Evaporator performance was measured with a suction-line heat exchanger fitted and the sensing bulb positioned both before and after the heat exchanger. Locating the bulb after the heat exchanger enabled stable operation to be achieved at much lower evaporator temperature difference, and simultaneously improved the evaporator heat transfer performance.
