Résumé

The Ras Laffan Helium Project became a reality in May 2003 with the signing of the Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) contract for the facilities needed to extract, purify and liquefy helium from Qatar's North field. Air Liquide was entrusted by two Qatari companies (RasGas and QatarGas) to design and built a helium recovery unit with production corresponding to approximately 10% of the world market. This will place Qatar in the group of leading world helium producers. The process used in this plant is presented. The presentation is focused on the first part of the plant, which is the purification section aimed at separating N2, CH4, H2, CO, Ar, O2, H2O and CO2 from He. It is composed of a cryogenic partial condensation unit, a hydrogen removal system, a drier, a pressure switch adsorber unit and a drier unit used for recycled gas. The second part of the plant is the He liquefier. The initial production of liquid helium was achieved on schedule in August 2005. Following this major step, the first loading of liquid helium into an 11 000 UsGa container was performed in September 2005.
