Résumé

The use of phase change materials (PCMs) to accumulate thermal energy in domestic refrigerators is a new approach to improve the efficiency of these appliances. The cooling capacity stored in the PCM can be used to stabilize the temperature in the refrigerator compartment and extend its off-cycle period, thereby saving energy. This paper investigates the design and operation of a thermal storage refrigerator through theoretical modelling and experimental validation. Computational fluid dynamics simulations were undertaken to identify the best performing (i.e. optimal for energy efficiency and most uniform temperature distribution) design options for the thermal storage refrigerator. Both the simulations and experimental results obtained in a prototype refrigerator will be presented and the potential energy savings discussed.
