Résumé

Corrections facilities are like small towns. They have all of the energy demands of housing (dormitories, lavatories, laundry, kitchen, etc.) as well as specialty functions (administration, security, medical and dental clinics, vocational training, storage, etc.). To save energy in this diverse environment, every operational aspect must be closely examined for potential savings. Located in a high desert environment near Madras, Ore., Deer Ridge Correctional Institution has a 425 000 ft2 (39 500 m2) medium-security facility with 1223 beds and an 150 000 ft2 (13 935 m2) minimum-security facility with 644 beds. The design team's efforts have enabled Deer Ridge to save nearly 35% over the ASHRAE Standard 90.1-1999 baseline.
