People are generally abandoning the view of air conditioning as a luxury product and sales of commercial air conditioning systems in Europe are expected to increase from USD 2.3 billion in 1999 to USD 3.6 billion by 2006. The article discusses the need for cooling. The market position and prospects of the types of systems - fixed, portable, close control - are described briefly. The paper discusses differences in operation and refrigerant policy and provides sources of further information.
