Résumé

In previous papers, we introduced the concept of a compact heat sink that combines the evaporator and the expansion device of a refrigeration system in a single unit. As the high-pressure subcooled liquid refrigerant expands in an array of oblique and parallel orifices, a spray cone is formed which directly impinges on a heated surface, removing large quantities of heat by boiling and evaporation of the liquid film. In this paper, we evaluate the performance of HFO-1234yf to replace HFC-134a in the compact refrigeration system focusing on the influence of distinct parameters, namely, applied thermal load, refrigerant charge and expansion restriction imposed by the orifices array. The analysis is based on the refrigeration system performance parameters considering a constant piston stroke, hot reservoir temperature and secondary fluid mass flow rate. The use of HFO-1234yf requires larger refrigerant charges, to match the 15% larger maximum heat transfer coefficients obtained with HFC-134a.
