Résumé

This paper provides a rundown of the history, status and future of gas-fired air conditioning and refrigeration in Australia and reviews the competitive positions of gas cooling technologies. "Gas" includes natural gas, propane (LP gas) and biogases. The gas cooling market was estimated at an overall electric load for conventional cooling plants of around 10 000 GWh per year (1997), worth some $A800 million. If all of this load could be converted using gas cooling technologies, the gas consumption would be around 91 petajoules (PJ) per year. The Task Force believes the gas industry could capture a 15 percent market share in the large and very large chiller sector by the end of 2005 if the recommended strategies were successfully implemented.
