Challenges of air conditioning decarbonization.

Résumé

Air conditioning of indoor spaces is responsible for growing energy demand practically in all commercial and residential buildings, as the recorded outdoor air temperatures are getting higher and higher all over the world. According to International Energy Agency the air conditioning systems consume globally 10% of the total electricity. Cooling technologies used in air conditioning currently have negative environmental impact which is caused both by increasing electrical energy demand and indirectly by leakages of Freons or Hydrofluorocarbons (HFC) refrigerants characterized by high Global Warming Potential (GWP). The paper analyses the possible rate of global air conditioning decarbonization considering both the sources and physical character of supply energy as well as replacement of refrigerants which are harmful to the environment. A special attention is paid to heat driven air conditioning systems, like evaporative cooling and sorption appliances using water as refrigerant. State of the art and challenges of the selected technologies development is presented and discussed.
