Résumé

Notes that in Germany natural materials and waste paper are seen as an ecological alternative to traditional thermal insulating materials, without rigorous analysis concerning health or primary energy content. Analyses in a graph and tables the structure of the thermal insulation material market in Germany from 1987 to 1995. States that legislation for energy conservation and CO2 reduction means that the thermal insulation market will grow from 30 M m3/year now to 60 or 100 M m3/year by 2050. Examines the availability of natural thermal insulation materials: cork, cotton, flax, hemp, etc., wood, wool, waste paper, straw, coconut fibres and reeds. Notes technical requirements imposing restrictions on their use. Concludes they can only complement traditional mineral insulating materials.
