Résumé
Low charge industrial ammonia systems are becoming increasingly important as a way to raise the safety and increase the efficiency of industrial applications by reducing the charge. Today, the modern industrial ammonia systems are designed as overflooded pumped circulation systems with fixed manual control valves to control the refrigerant flow through the evaporators. To compensate for fluctuations in the running conditions and maldistribution in the air-cooled fin and tube evaporators, the systems are designed with high circulation ratios that increase the overall charge of the system both directly in the evaporators and indirectly in the attached suction pipes. Since the charge of an ammonia system to a large extend is related to the evaporators and the attached return lines, it is important to be able to control the circulation ratio to decrease the charge and at the same time maintain or increase the efficiency. In the present paper, an extensive measurement on a state-of-the-art ammonia evaporator is introduced. The measurements are conducted to find the lowest usable circulation ratio for the evaporators to reduce the charge and at the same time maintain or increase the efficiency. Three evaporators are tested and compared. First, measurements on a typical bottom feed state-of-the-art evaporator are presented followed by an interlaced evaporator. At last, two types of a side feed evaporator are tested. First, a counter current one with the first row of refrigerant flowing in the opposite direction as the air flow and then a co-current one where the first row of refrigerant is flowing in the same direction as the air flow.
