Résumé

Hermetic compressors form an integral part of domestic as well as industrial refrigeration systems. A reciprocating compressor is an important device in this cycle that pressurizes the gaseous fluid to a rated high pressure through a piston constrained to move within a hollow cylinder. It does so by utilizing a form of energy input, typically through an electric motor. Compressor performance is a significant contributor in improving the possible energy savings associated with a refrigeration system. The current article focuses on the frictional losses associated with a compressor, occurring between the piston and the cylinder. The idea is to experimentally investigate variations in the frictional force with variations in the control variables i.e. normal load on piston, the piston-cylinder clearance and the piston (linear) relative speed. Equivalent operational conditions have been designed & used to simulate appropriate frictional test using a Tribometer in the laboratory. Experimental data thus obtained has been used to obtain a functional form representing dependence of friction on the mentioned control variables.
